IT IS probably the most famous greeting in the universe.

But the simple Vulcan salute left makers of the new Star Trek film with a galactic-sized headache - because Mr Spock just couldn't do it.

After much head-scratching, experts on the $150 million blockbuster - which boasts stunning high-tech effects - hit upon a low-tech but logical solution - gluing actor Zachary Quinto's fingers together, The Mail on Sunday newspaper in the UK reports.

Quinto, 31, admitted he found it impossible to form his fingers into the distinctive V-shaped gesture, saying: "It's much harder than it looks. Seriously."
One on-set insider said: "Zach could do the salute some of the time but only after he'd positioned his fingers the right way off-camera.

"In some scenes he has to do the salute while speaking his lines so they ended up using skin-protective superglue, like they use in hospitals, to stick his fingers together."

William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the long-running TV show and the first seven Star Trek films, was also unable to do the salute, so he used fishing line to tie his fingers together.

The wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry has left £2.65million to her pets.

Majel Barrett Roddenberry, 76, died last December, leaving the money in her will to her cats and dogs.

Legal papers do not specify how many pets she had.
Mrs Roddenberry, whose husband died in 1991, also left £662,000 to her housekeeper, who is allowed stay at the family mansion to take care of the animals.

But it would appear such apparent largesse won't dent the family fortune.

Her son Eugene is to receive the family's Bel Air mansion and £60million in installments.

Gene Roddenberry is best known as the American screenwriter and producer of the original Star Trek series.

He was sometimes referred to as the 'great bird of the galaxy' for his founding role in the science fiction show.

Mrs Roddenberry, an actress, appeared in many Star Trek episodes, and was sometimes referred to as the 'First Lady of Star Trek'.

After his death from heart failure, some of Mr Roddenberry's ashes were placed on board the Space Shuttle Columbia and launched into space.

In 2012, there are plans for another space shuttle to launch more of his ashes into deep space, along with Mrs Roddenberry's ashes.

Actor From 'Angel' Dies at 33 of Heart Disease

Andy Hallett, who made his mark playing green-skinned, good-guy demon Lorne on the TV series "Angel," has died of congestive heart disease. Hallett was 33.

Hallett was taken by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after having problems breathing and died there Sunday, following a five-year battle with the heart condition, his agent Pat Brady said Tuesday.

His father, Dave Hallett, was by his side.

He went on to become an assistant to Joss Whedon's wife, Brady said. It was when Whedon saw the lanky Hallett perform karaoke that he had him audition for "Angel," a spinoff of Whedon's hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Hallett snagged the part of Lorne.

"Andy was the all-American boy from Massachusetts," Brady said. "He was a hoot. He was comfortable wherever he went. Girls loved him. He was a very gregarious, happy young man."

Born and raised in Osterville, Mass., Hallett moved out to Los Angeles when he was 23 and worked as a messenger at a talent agency, said Brady.

Hallett proved himself a fan favorite on "Angel" as the show tune loving, red horned demon seer who runs the karaoke club Caritas and can read a person's aura when they sing, revealing their problems and futures.

The series, starring David Boreanaz as the brooding vampire Angel, ran for five seasons on the WB network before it was canceled, ending in 2004.

Hallett was diagnosed with his heart condition at the end of the show, said Brady, and had been in and out of hospitals for the past five years. He decided to concentrate on his own music, stepping away from acting.

Hallett, an only child, is survived by his father Dave Hallett and mother Lori Hallett.

Star Trek’s Young Actors Step Into Big Space Boots

LOS ANGELES — The fresh-faced leading men of J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek face a rare challenge: As they assume the roles of Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew, they must provide their own unique takes on characters that transformed the original actors into pop-culture touchstones.

William Shatner’s James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy’s Mr. Spock and DeForest Kelley’s Dr. Leonard H. “Bones” McCoy — few actors are as closely identified with their screen characters as are these giants from the original sci-fi television series.

Now the new Star Trek cast must convince audiences around the world that they — not the faces burned into viewers’ memories since 1966 — make up the crew of the Enterprise.

Starfleet’s newest officers discussed how they approached stepping into their predecessors’ giant space boots during a weekend press conference ahead of the movie’s May 8 release. The new captain addressed the question first as Chris Pine described the daunting task of becoming only the second man in history to play Kirk on the big screen.

“I started watching the first season pretty feverishly,” Pine said. “Just to kind of acquaint myself with the dynamic between the characters and the aesthetic. But I found myself midway through trying to create the perfect William Shatner impression of doing Captain Kirk. And I felt that that was not the best move for me.”

That approach also didn’t jibe with Abrams’ promise to reboot the franchise.

“It really went against the mandate that J.J. put forth in the beginning of the process, which was really to re-imagine these characters and to bring a unique and specific take on them as our predecessors had done,” Pine said. “It really became a matter of having a conversation with J.J. about what little nuances I could take from Mr. Shatner’s performance to use in my own to give a sense of continuity between the characters.”

Unlike Pine, Heroes star Zachary Quinto had the advantage of having his predecessor available on the Star Trek set for first-hand consultation while developing his performance as the young Spock.

The bitter Bettie is now saying, "How could you not put one of the founding figures into a movie that was being resurrected? That doesn't make good business sense. I've become even more popular than when I was playing Captain Kirk. I'm good box office - and I get good publicity."

It's not like they didn't ask him! Shatner turned down an appearance in the new film because the part wasn't large enough!

And then Shatner declined a meet and greet with hottie Chris Pine, who plays the famed Captain Kirk in the prequel.

As a result, Pine has reached out to Shatner, but we don't know if the original Kirk has reached back!

The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz blog on Friday confirmed the rumor, first reported by Bloody-Disgusting and Latino Review, that Watchmen's Jackie Earle Haley will play Freddy Krueger in New Line/Platinum Dunes' upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot.

Haley, who won rave reviews playing Rorschach in Zack Snyder's Watchmen, takes over the role of the iconic screen villain from Robert Englund, who originated the character in Wes Craven's 1984 first Nightmare movie.

Samuel Bayer is directing the relaunch, which was written by Wesley Strick.

Haley had been one of several actors on the shortlist to play the part. But scheduling issues almost scotched the deal: Haley is also working on the TV series Human Target, which led to conflicting dates.

Krueger, as fans know, is the serial child killer murdered by angry parents who returns with a burned face, striped sweater, fedora and razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.

Harper's Christopher Gorham won't be coming back

Christopher Gorham, star of CBS' upcoming mystery-horror limited series Harper's Island, told SCI FI Wire that the show is "like Survivor in that way."

That means it will end its story after the initial 13 episodes, and a second season will feature "an entirely new cast, an entirely new story and in an entirely new location," Gorham said in an exclusive interview. "The only thing that it will have in common with this incarnation of Harper's will be the name Harper's Island. But it won't be Harper's Island. It'll be Harper's Safari or Harper's Cruise Ship or something like that."

Gorham (Jake 2.0) stars as Henry, a man whose friends and family gather together on the title island for his wedding to high-school sweetheart Trish (Katie Cassidy). It's far from a joyous homecoming for many, as seven years ago someone killed several people on the island, including the mother of Henry's best friend, Abby (Elaine Cassidy), who reluctantly agrees to return to the island for Henry's nuptials. Worse, someone starts killing members of the wedding party.

SCI FI Fire spoke exclusively to Gorham by telephone last month. Following are edited excerpts from that conversation. Harper's Island debuts on Thursday and will air at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Helena Bonham Carter revealed BIG SPOILERS about her top-secret role in McG's Terminator Salvation, according to a report in the British Daily Mail, which also published a spoilerific image of what it says is her character, which you can view after the jump.

Carter said that she plays a villain in the film: "I kind of play a baddie, definitely a baddie," she said. "I don't know how much I'm allowed to say, but I'm a very bad person."
Carter will reportedly play Serena Korgen, a role originally envisioned for Tilda Swinton, whom Carter replaced shortly before filming began in Albuquerque, N.M., last year. Carter worked 10 days on the movie, which also stars Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Bryce Dallas Howard.

"Tim [Burton] would have killed me if I hadn't done it, because he's such a Terminator fan," Carter said, referring to her longtime partner. Terminator Salvation opens May 21.
