Kim Manners-Supernatural and 53 hours of The X-Files, Dead

reported that Kim Manners, a prolific director and producer best known for directing The CW's Supernatural and 53 hours of The X-Files, died Sunday night after battling cancer.

Manners' career included Charlie's Angels, Automan, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., MANTIS and Harsh Realm.

His last directorial effort was "Family Remains," the Jan. 15 episode of Supernatural, AICN reported.

Manners was an executive producer of The X-Files in addition to directing dozens of episodes, including the 2002 two-hour series finale, "The Truth."

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke issued this statement:

"Everyone at Supernatural is walking around in a daze, shocked and absolutely devastated. Kim was a brilliant director; more than that, he was a mentor and friend. He was one of the patriarchs of the family, and we miss him desperately. He gave so much to Supernatural, and everything we do on the show, now and forever, is in memory of him."

Among those surviving Manners is sister and longtime assistant director Tana Manners (Deadly Whispers). A brother, Kelly Manners, was a producer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and currently serves as a producer on the upcoming Fox series Dollhouse.

Afro Samurai

Samuel L. Jackson and Kelly Hu, who provide voices for Afro Samurai/Ninja Ninja and Okiku in the new Afro Samurai video game, told reporters they enjoyed putting M-rated violence in players' hands. Jackson, who also produces the TV series on which the game is based, felt violence was imperative to the Afro Samurai experience.

"I just wanted to make sure the game was true to the spirit of the series itself," Jackson told a group of reporters on Tuesday in Hollywood at the game's red-carpet premiere. "That it was sexy, that it was hip and had the elements of old and new and that the violence was of a level that made people really want to play it."

Okiku is a non-playable character in the game, but she still fights in the background and in cinematic sequences. Hu had to provide more grunts and huffs than a normal episode of the show requires.

"It's a lot more fighting, I think," Hu said on the red carpet. "A lot more fighting noises and stuff like that that you have to do for the game, but pretty much the same thing. I use the same voice. It's the same character."

Dakota Fanning Sci-Fi-News

Dakota Fanning, who confirmed that she's in talks about playing a vampire in the upcoming Twilight sequel New Moon, told reporters that she's eager to tackle a role so at odds with her previous parts: i.e., someone evil.

"I hope that it does work out," Fanning said in a group interview on Friday in Los Angeles, where she was promoting Coraline. "It's not 100 percent for sure. I can't say it's for sure yet. It would be really cool if it does work out. I'm a big fan." Fanning would play the role of Jane, a member of the aristocratic Volturi vampires from Italy, who has a twin brother named Alec. "I think it would be really cool to be something different than I've ever been before," she said. "I mean, a vampire, it's really neat. The character I would be playing is kind of evil and mean, so it would be a fun opportunity."

Ring of fire: Indian Ocean to see solar eclipse

PARIS (AFP) – A few lucky people in the Indian Ocean will be treated to a rare event on Monday when an annular solar eclipse will transform the Sun into a dark disc with a blazing ring-shaped corona around its rim.

In solar eclipses, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow on the terrestrial surface.

In an annular eclipse, a tiny shift in distance that results from celestial mechanics means the Moon does not completely cover the Sun's face, as it does in a total eclipse.

Instead, for those directly under the alignment, the Moon covers most of the Sun's surface, and a ring-like crown of solar light blazes from the edge of the disk.

For those watching from the fringe of the track, the Sun is partially obscured, as if a bite has been taken out of it.

According to veteran NASA eclipse-watcher Fred Espenak, the total eclipse track will run from west to east on Monday from 0606 GMT to 0952 GMT.

It will traverse the Indian Ocean and western Indonesia before petering out just short of Mindanao, the Philippines.
