Attorneys: 'Watchmen' settlement talks productive

LOS ANGELES — Moviegoers may get to watch the "Watchmen" after all.

Attorneys for rival studios fighting over the release of the superhero flick told a federal judge on Friday that they're having fruitful settlement talks.

Attorneys for 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. asked the judge to delay a hearing Friday so those discussions can continue over the weekend.

U.S. District Judge Gary Allen Feess agreed to continue the hearing but says a trial over whether to block the film's March release is still set for Jan. 20.

Lou Karasik, who is representing Fox, told Feess that the delay would be "very, very helpful" to settlement discussions he deemed "productive." Friday's revelation surprised Feess, who noted that Warner Bros. had been seeking to move up the Jan. 20 trial to next week, citing the film's marketing campaign and its March 6 release date.

An injunction barring the film's release also jeopardizes the $150 million Warner Bros. has invested in the "Watchmen" movie, the studio's attorneys argued in court documents filed this week.

Fox sued in February to stop the release of "Watchmen," claiming Warner Bros. violated its interests by filming the tale. Feess agreed last month that Fox appears to have the right to distribute the film.

Funeral held for `Star Trek' actress Roddenberry

Friends, family and fans gathered this weekend to bid a final farewell to "Star Trek" actress Majel Barrett Roddenberry.

More than 250 people attended the funeral Sunday in Los Angeles. Roddenberry was the widow of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, and had been involved in the "Star Trek" universe for more than four decades.

The 76-year-old Roddenberry died of leukemia Dec. 18 at her Bel-Air home.

Among the mourners were "Star Trek" stars Nichelle Nichols, George Takei and Walter Koenig.

Three people wore Star Fleet Academy formal tunics, and many others sported "Star Trek" rings, pins or medallions.

Roddenberry played the dark-haired Number One in the original pilot, but metamorphosed into the blond, miniskirted Nurse Christine Chapel in the original 1966-69 TV series.

How can unknown actor, 26, play the 903-year-old Time Lord ?

As the Time Lord, perhaps he should have seen the fuss coming.

Doctor Who devotees might suggest that's another good reason why Matt Smith, at the tender age of 26, should not be in control of the Tardis.

The announcement at the weekend that the actor is to be the 11th Doctor set internet message boards ablaze with complaints yesterday.
Many fans warned that Smith is far too young to convey the Doctor's desired universe-weariness.

One critic simply wrote on a BBC message board: 'Toddler in the Tardis! He is far, far, far too young. What is this obsession with going younger and younger?'Almost seven million viewers watched as the BBC revealed that Smith will soon begin filming his first episodes of the 46-year-old Doctor Who series.

His character is aged 903 - and the youngest of the ten previous incarnations of the Doctor, Peter Davison, entered the Tardis at 29.

Some fans suggested the BBC had chosen an unknown actor to cut down on costs, while others said they wanted to create love interest in the show. 'They say age is irrelevant so why not cast a 40-year-old?' one Whovian wrote.

Top in Science Fiction TV Shows - TOP list TOP 10 SCI FI SHOWS:

1. SG-1
STARGATE SG-1
Earth stargate (found near Giza in 1928) is housed in a top-secret U.S. military base known as the SGC (Stargate Command) underneath Cheyenne Mountain. Col. Jack O'Neill (R. D. Anderson), Dr. Daniel Jackson (Shanks), Capt. Samantha Carter (Tapping) and Teal'c (Judge) compose the original SG-1 team (a few characters join and/or leave the team in later seasons). Along with 24 other SG teams, they venture to distant planets exploring the galaxy and searching for defenses from the Goa'uld, in the forms of technology and alliances with friendly advanced races.

The parasitic Goa'uld use advanced technology to cast themselves as Egyptian Gods and are bent on galactic conquest and eternal worship. Throughout the first eight seasons, the Goa'uld are the primary antagonists. They are a race of highly intelligent, ruthless snake-like alien parasites capable of invading and controlling the bodies of other species, including humans. The original arch-enemy from this race was the System Lord Apophis (Peter Williams). Other System Lords, such as Baal and Anubis, play pivotal roles in the later seasons. In the ninth season a new villain emerges, the Ori. The Ori are advanced beings with unfathomable technology from another galaxy, also bent on galactic conquest and eternal worship. The introduction of the Ori accompanies a departure from the primary focus on Egyptian mythology into an exploration of the Arthurian mythology surrounding the Ori, their followers, and their enemies — the Ancients.

The remake to top all remakes (original release year 1978) - this time around Starbuck is a woman and the FX are eerily realistic. Toss in a soundtrack that evokes the sparseness of space, highly original sets, genuine human drama and some purely paranoid plot twists and it's easy to see why this show has so many fans. Began life as a two-part miniseries.

SCI FI Channel confirmed on March 22, 2007 that the show has been renewed for a fourth season of 22 episodes, an increase from the previously announced 13 episodes.

Battlestar Galactica runs from 2003 and has a huge fan base.

BABYLON 5
Babylon 5 is an epic American science fiction television series created, produced, and largely written by J. Michael Straczynski.

This is reflected in the opening monologue of each episode, which includes the words "last, best hope for peace" in Season One, but changes to "last, best hope for victory" by Season Three.

B5 was able to build a surprisingly healthy and enduring fan base. In a UN-style setting, an Earth alliance is trying to prevent another war like the one recently fought with the Minbari. Terrific character development throughout set to a backdrop of action-packed space operatic fare.
